I was enrolled into college algebra because it's a core class but I didn't realize how hard it was going to be. I have to finish a pre-requisite review by saturday and it seems I've forgotten how to do basic algebra 2 math. I'm currently stuck on a question about functions.

For f(x)=2x^2-3 and g(x)=7x-x^2, find f(-2)

is the question I'm stuck on. I understand f(x) means its just a function of x and means the same thing as y but that's all I know. I don't understand the question and I don't know where to go from there. Can anyone help me??

You may want to consider taking a review course first.

Or, maybe you can fit self-review into your current schedule.

There are many free, on-line algebra courses. (Use Google to find them.)

The Khan Academy has short video lessons that cover most algebra topics.

f(x) = 2x^2 - 3

g(x) = 7x - x^2

find f(-2)

I'm stuck

I understand f(x) means ... the same thing as y

Yes, symbol x represents the function input, and symbol f(x) represents the function output.

f(-2) is "function notation" for the value of y when x equals -2.

When they ask you to find the number f(-2), they simply want you to calculate the output of function f when the input is -2.

In other words, evaluate the expression 2x^2 - 3 at x = -2

If you need more assistance with this exercise, please show your work so far.

Cheers
