Mr. Gates owns 3/8 of Macrohard. After selling 1/3 of his share, how much more of
Macrohard does Mr. Gates still own?

My solution so far:

3/8 = 9/24 and 1/3 = 8/24
9/24 - 8/24 = 1/24

But my book says a totally different thing which confuses me:

3/8 x 1/3 = 1/8.3/8 - 1/8 = 2/8 =1/4

Please help!

How much more than what (or who) does he own? What is your question? Or did you hide your question in the subject line? If so, then what are you proposing to subtract from what? Why?

I'm suspecting that the book might be incorrect. The way I solved it is the only way I know about subtracting fractions.

How does "one third of the whole thing" relate to "one third of his share of the whole thing"? What is your reasoning here?

On what basis? What is your reasoning? ;)
