There are 3500 oranges in the stock room and they need to be distributed out to 8 stores around the country, based on their sales.
How many oranges will each of the following stores receive:

Liverpool £1000
Stoke £500
London £2200
Chelmsford £400
Leeds £600
Swindon £3000
Bath £1100
Bristol £700

Equivalently, find the total sales. Find each stores percentage of sales by dividing its sales by the total. Multiply 3500 by each percentage to determine how many oranges should be allocated to each store.

Note- the results may not always be integers. There are a number of different "rules" for allocating "fractional" oranges, none of which are perfect! One method you could use is to first allocate the integer part to each store, then allocate one additional orange to the store with the largest fractional part, then one additional orange to the store with the next highest fractional point, etc. until you run out of oranges.

(There has been an enormous amount written about "allocation", primarily on allocation of votes.)
