The larger of two numbers is 12 more than the smaller and the sum of the two numbers is 10.Find the numbers.

Let the large # = L

Let the small # = S

The larger of two numbers is 12 more than the smaller

L = S + 12 ..........................................(1)

Now continue.....

A beginning

The larger of two numbers is 12 more than the smaller and the sum of the two numbers is 10.Find the numbers.

The goal here is to translate sentences into math statements.

The first step is to ask "What are we talking about?" The answer is two numbers, call them A and B.

The next question to ask is, "What do we know about A and B?"

One is larger then the other, let's say A is larger then B, that is A > B.

A is 12 more then B, that is, the difference between them is 12. How can you say that using a math statement?

You also know that the sum of A and B is 10, how do you say that mathematically?

You must be able to answer these questions, repeat the questions and look at examples of similar problems until what you need to do makes sense. Examples can be found by googling "Algebra word problems." So try something and then ask for more help if need be,
