I need some help with this (most likely) simple formula.

I have a figure - say 16.60

16.60 is the figure I get when I reduce an amount x by 17%

How do I work out the original x amount?

so

x - 0.17*x = 16.60

Now continue....

If the original amount is reduced to 17% to get 16.60, then 16.60 is 100% - 17% = 83% of the original amount. So use the stuff you learned in algebra for translating: "is" is "equals" and "of" means "times", so "16.60 is 83% of x" is "16.60 = 0.83*x". Then solve for x. ;)
