The following is the age distribution of 2000 persons working in a large textile mill
Age GroupsNo of persons
15 and less than 2080
20 and less than 25250
25 and less than 30300
30 and less than 35325
35 and less than 40287
40 and less than 45
220
45 and less than 50268
50 and less than 55150
55 and less than 6075
60 and less than 6525
65 and less than 7020

Because of heavy looses the management decides to bring down the strength to 40 percent of the present number according to the following scheme.
(i) To retrench the first 10% from the lowest age group 15-20
(ii)To absorb the next 10% in other branches
(iii)To make 10% from the highest age group 40-45 retire permanently

What will be the age limits of persons retained in the mill and of those transferred to other branches?

I found that question in the book, but I didn't understand the concepts the author use. Here is the solution as follows:
SOLUTION
The number of persons to be retrenched from the lower group are(2000*10%)=200.
Eighty of these will be in the 15-20 age group and the rest 120(200-80) in the 20-25 age group.
The persons to be absorbed in other branches=(2000*10%)=800.These persons belong to the following age groups:
Age GroupNo. of persons
20-25
(250-120)130
25-30-300
30-35-325
35-40(287-242)45
No of persons=800

Those who will be retiring (2000*10%)=200 and these persons belong to highest age group as shown below:
Age groupNo. of persons
65-70-20
60-65-25
55-60-75
50-55(150-70)80
No of persons=200

Age limits of persons who are retained
Age GroupNo. of Persons
35-40242
40-45220
45-50268
50-5570
No of persons=800
I don't understand the concepts in red colour

Nobody knows
