I had a test question from a book.

It says work out 1/6 of an hour plus 1/5 of an hour for which I worked out as 11/30

Is then says to work out how many minutes this is???

Really? This from a GCSE book (English UK) for 14yr olds.

I checked the answers at the back of the book and it says 22 minutes, but how do you get from 11/30th of an hour to 22 minutes?
The book does not explain!

I had to google the answer?

I mean!, A good exercise into how to turn kids off maths!! Well done authors!

Unless - I'm missing something simple? Hence my post here.

Thanks.

How nice that they worked this out to have a denominator of "30", since hours have 2*30 = 60 minutes. Obviously, 11/30 hours = 22/60 hours, which leads very quickly to being equivalent to 22 minutes. Easy-peasy!

Yes, it's a fairly simplistic question for students at that level of study. But what's wrong with giving them a "gimme" every once in a while? :p
