We have a catering fund that pays for our meals during a shift. All year 6 firefighters pay £10 into this fund and one pays £7. At the end of the year the excess money is returned back. The total this year is £400. How much should the 6 firefighters get and how much should the one get who only paid £7 receive. Please show with working out to help them understand..thanks

Six fire-fighters pay 10 and one pays 7 - for a total of 67.
At the end of the year, six fire fighters (each) should get (400/67*10 =) £59.71 - and the seventh person gets the rest (£41.74).

Another way to explain it shows relative percents.

The payment amount is £67.

The group of six pays £60, and the seventh person pays £7.

Therefore, the group of six pays 60 parts out of 67.

We can write that as a ratio: 60/67

The seventh person pays 7 parts out of 67.

That ratio is 7/67.

If we divide 60/67, we get 0.895522...

If we divide 7/67, we get 0.104477...

These show the relative percents of each group.

60/67 = 89.55% (rounded)

7/67 = 10.45% (rounded)

In other words, the group of six is entitled to roughly 89.55% of the surplus, and the seventh person is entitled to roughly 10.45% of the surplus.

I say "roughly" because the percents have been rounded.

89.55% of
£400 is £358.20. Divided six ways, each member of the group of six gets £59.70.

10.45% of £400 is £41.79, and that goes to the seventh person.

Now, 6 times
£59.70 is £358.20. Add £41.79 to that, and you get £399.99.

There will be £0.01 left over because there ain't no coins smaller than a penny to divide. Who gets the leftover penny? You decide! :D
