ok the problem we have is...

-27.9 + 36

And I have no clue what to do. Also my math teacher said that she will 'only accept fraction answers and not decimals.'
So...can anyone help?

-27.9 + 36 = -279/10 + 36 = -279/10 + 360/10 = (-279+360)/10 = ??

How are we doing?

Your doing a whole lot more than i could have figured out. :D

So it would be 81/10. Right?

-27.9 + 36

Another approach would be to work the problem in decimal form and then switch the answer into fraction form.

Putting the positive number first and setting up the subtraction, we have:
36.0
-27.9

8.1 Now we have 81/10, or 8 1/10 as a mixed number.
