The greater of two number is 10 more than the smaller. Their sum is 38. Find the numbers.

(x+10) + x = 38 ; solve

Part of the required solution is that the unknowns are defined.

For example, the following two lines would be included before the equation:

Let \(\displaystyle \ \)x = the smaller number.

Then x + 10 = the larger number.

- - - - - -- -- - -- - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - --

The above is what I would type if I wanted to be conventional.

Or, I might present it as:

Let x = the smaller number

Then 38 - x = the larger number (or vice versa)

Translate the following sentence of the problem into an equation:

"The greater of two numbers is 10 more than the smaller."

Equation:

38 - x = x + 10
