Applications of the Integral: Horizontal slicing

I was reading the text and it said that you must subtract the larger x-value to the smaller x-value.

I dont know how you would determine which x value is larger and which is smaller.

Please help.
 
Without a specific question, it is impossible to give a specific answer. (And I have no idea what your book meant by "subtracting this to that"; this terminology is nonstandard.)

But usually the x-value that is the larger number (further to the right on the number line) is the larger x-value, and the x-value that is the smaller number (further to the left on the number line) is the smaller x-value.
