differential equations

i just went through the first day of my differential equations class. the teach hardly speaks engilsh and the book is very bleak. i was wondering if anyone could give me some tips on:

1) determining between linear and non
2) determining ezplicit solutions
3) verifying families of functions as a solution
4) and finding values of M to make a given function a solution

i did farely well in cal II. i just cant get an imediate grip on this stuff.
