Hi,
I'm from Australia and we don't use fractions here for measuring.
At school it is taught how to add and multiply fractions.
When measuring, say a pieces of wood for a project, is adding or multiplying fractions done a great deal.
If yes, is it troublesome or do you use common denominators frequently to make it easier or whatever other method is used.
This is more of a curious question as I am studying to be a math tutor and want to be able to explain alternative methods and why.
Thanks for any help.
Chris.

Measurements commonly use fractions whose denominators are powers of 2, which makes finding common denominators relatively easy.

Look up information about reading and using rulers marked in inches.
