Area of rectangle = 9600 sq. feet

L= x+4 W=x

help please =]

If it were true that "only the area is given," then it would be impossible to find the length and width of the rectangle (you didn't say, but I assume that's what you are supposed to do.)

You are given MORE.....
you know that the length is x + 4
you know that the width is x

You are expected to know that for a rectangle,
Area = length * width

Substitute what is given:
9600 = (x + 4)*x
9600 = x<SUP>2</SUP> + 4x

Get one side to be equal to 0:
0 = x<SUP>2</SUP> + 4x - 9600

Ok...now you have a quadratic equation. You can solve it by factoring or by using the quadratic formula (I'd use the quadratic formula, personally). Once you have the value of x, you can find the dimensions of the rectangle.

I hope this helps you.
