Mary and Betty have saved $43. Betty has saved $3 more than 3 times the amout Mary has saved. How much money has each girl saved?

Equation:

Mary has saved $

Betty has saved $

pleace help me for wordproblums....thanks

Amount Mary has saved= x
Amount Betty has saved= y

So we have

(1) x+y= 43 and

(2) y=3x+3

Now we have to solve for x and y. We replace the second equation into the first

x+ (3x+3)=43 , which means 4x+3=43,

and now we pass 3 substracting to the other side

4x=40, which means x=10.

With this we go to equation (2) and replace x to get y

y=3*10+3=33

So, x=10, y=33, meaning

Mary has saved $ 10
Betty has saved $ 33

Cheers
