A problem such as 29 of the first 42 presidents were lawyers. What percentage of these presidents were lawyers?

To find the percent that x is of y, divide x by y, and convert the resulting decimal to percent form.

For instance, 3 is 60% of 5 because 3 ÷ 5 = 0.6, and 0.6 converts to 60%.

percent means per100

your problem is the same as:
out of 42 presidents, 29 were lawyers;
using same ratio, how many lawyers if 100 presidents?

a : b
100 : b / a * 100

42 : 29
100 : 29 / 42 * 100 = .690476... * 100 = 69.0476 = 69% (rounded).
