Go ahead and pick a negative number for your n and then apply the expressions you see in (b), (c) and (d) and then see which expression produces the least value.

Somethings to think about:

say n= -3

which is bigger (-3) or 0?

which is bigger (-3) or (-(-3))?

etc.

Basically - what SirMichael said - he beat me to the punch!!

what is the concept

Here are some concepts.

(1) Multiplication of signed numbers

(+) times (+) = (+)
(-) times (-) = (+)

In other words, if the sign of two numbers is the same, then their product is positive

(+) times (-) = (-)
(-) times (+) = (-)

In other words, if the sign of two numbers is not the same, then their product is negative

(2) A leading negative sign is just an abbreviation for multiplication by -1

-n means (-1)(n)

-x means (-1)(x)

-B means (-1)(B)

(3) The square of any Real number can never be negative

If you doubt this, then start picking values from the Real number line and square them. Try to get a negative result! (After you've failed enough times, you'll realize why a square is never negative.)

(4) Numbers get bigger, as we move from left to right on the Real number line. Numbers get smaller, as we move from right to left on the Real number line.

Show us what you get, for your exercise! :D
