Re: speed of sound

Hello, cbaconton!

A speed of 88 ft/sec is equal to a speed of 60 mph.
If the speed of sound is 750 mph, what is the speed of sound in ft/sec?

We are told that: \(\displaystyle \,88\text{ ft/sec} \:=\:60\text{ mph}\) . . . that is: \(\displaystyle \:\frac{88\text{ ft/sec}}{60\text{ mph}} \,=\,1\,\) *

We want: \(\displaystyle x\text{ ft/sec} \:=\:750\text{ mph}\) . . . where: \(\displaystyle \frac{x\text{ ft/sec}}{750\text{ mph}}\,=\,1\;\) *

Equate the two fractions: \(\displaystyle \L\:\frac{x}{750} \:=\:\frac{88}{60}\)

. . and solve for \(\displaystyle x.\)

Most tutors won't "do" students' work for them so, in the future, please consider showing your work.

Thank you for your consideration.

Li'l time saver trick:

Let symbol ~ mean "is equivalent to"

if a ~ x
then b ~ x / a * b

if 60 ~ 88
then 750 ~ 88 / 60 * 750
