Checking A Fractional Answer to 7x - 2 (x - 2) = 12

Hi, Here is my problem: 7x - 2 (x - 2) = 12 , I got the answer x = 8/5, which I know is correct. My problem is that we are supposed to check our answers. When I plug 8/5 in for x I cannot get the problem to balance and I am not sure what I am doing wrong. Anytime I end up with a fractional answer I have this problem. Can you please help me???
