Inverse Functions

For r(y) = 3y + 1, what is (r x r^-1) (y)?
Please clarify what the question means. An image of the original problem would help.

I expected you to ask, "what is [imath]r^{-1}(y)[/imath], the inverse of r?"

If what you wrote means [imath](r\times r^{-1})(y)[/imath], you would want to find the inverse and then multiply the two functions together, which is a very odd thing to do: [imath]r(y)\times r^{-1}(y)[/imath].

On the other hand, if you meant [imath](r\circ r^{-1})(y)[/imath], you would be looking for the composition of r and its inverse, which you could do with no work at all.
