He took out the 0 of 50 (because 0 is nothing) and only fell 5 feet.

Are you thinking the ladder follows the contours of the curve x=c*sin(y) ?

So if c is sufficiently large then the height "y" would not get very "big" even though the length of the ladder is 50 feet.
