Can someone help me form an equation for this question:
Yvonne is 12. Xavier is twice as old as Yvonne was when Xavier was as old as Yvonne is now. How old is Xavier?
This can't be correct as 12=2Y implies that Y=6. But Y=6 contradicts that Y=12.Y=12 now
12 = X = 2Y then

Using the methods explained at the links, we get:Yvonne is 12. Xavier is twice as old as Yvonne was when Xavier was as old as Yvonne is now. How old is Xavier?

OK fine, not a big deal. But can you show me where I went wrong? We all just want to learn from this site.I don't :wink:
Code:z:12 z:16* y: 8* y:12 .....|.........-4........NOW.......
First of all your code isn't really showing up - the image is just the top part of a spread sheet calc I suspect.I don't :wink:
Code:z:12 z:16* y: 8* y:12 .....|.........-4........NOW.......
I would do this with just one variable. "Yvonne is 12" so "when Xavier was as old as Yvonne is now", Xavier was 12. If Yvonne was, then, y years old, Xavier is now 2y years old so that was 2y- 12 years ago. Yvonne is now y+ 2y- 12= 3y- 12= 12. 3y= 24, y= 24/3= 8 so Xavier is now 2y= 2(8)= 16.Can someone help me form an equation for this question:
