I have been presented a series of numbers and asked which is the odd one out and why. I haven’t been able to figure this out and keen on some thoughts. The numbers are:

3, 4, 13, 14, 40, 46

Thanks

Commonly this kind of question does not have one correct answer. You may be able to give a reason for choosing any of them. The best that can be hoped is that there is one "obvious" answer.

I see nothing obvious, so I would not spend any more time on it, unless there is some context that might hint at what the author might be thinking.

The answer for your homework is 46? Why?

3 and 4 is a difference of +1
4 and 13 is 3*4+1
13 and 14 is a difference of +1
14 and 40 is 3*14-2
Therefore, 46 has the greatest deviation and little in common with 40.
