How is this done?

Todd is 33 years old: his nephew Jacob is 12. In how many years will Jacob be 1/2 his uncle Todd's age?

This is my son's algebra and I have always been bad with story problems.

Thank you for any help

Since you don't know this subject - you won't be able to teach your son.

Let your son post the problem - showing us what he has tried and exactly where he is stuck, so that we know where to begin to help him.

To start - begin naming things:

Number of years to pass when Jacob will be half of Todds age = Y

then Todd's age will be = 33 + Y

Jacob's age will be = 12+ Y

Then the given condition says:

33 + Y = 2 * ( 12 + Y) ............................Solve for "Y"

Then you should check answer by adding Y to their present ages and see if one is double of the other.
