Q) 4 letter words are to be formed from the letters of the word MONKEY. If each letter can be used once, find how many there are that:

a) contains the letter M
b) start with K and include Y
C)begin with N and end with consonant

Start with:

How many letters sre there? (6 - no duplicate letter)

How many slots are there to fill? (4)

If you did not have any restrictions:

We can fill the first slot with 6 ways - 5 letters left

We can fill the second slot with 5 ways - 4 letters left

etc.

How many different four letter words can you make?

Now continue with your problem - with restrictions.

Sometimes much easier if you convert to numbers:

4 digit numbers are to be formed from the digits 123456.
If each digit can be used once, find how many there are that:

a) contain the digit 1
b) start with 4 and include 6
c) begin with 3 and end with 1 or 4 or 5
