I can't figure out how to solve this word problem.

A tank can be filled by one pipe in four hours and by a second pipe in six hours, and when it is full, the tank can be drained by a third pipe in three hours. If the tank is empty and all three pipes are open, in how many hours will the tank be filled?

First figure out what is the question asking for.

how many hours will the tank be filled?

So now name the variable asked for

Hours to fill the tank = t

So

In one hour fraction of the tank gets filled = ??

Now use

fraction coming in - fraction going out = fraction filled in
