Sorry to ask this--I am working on a problem with my son and I can't seem to get the correct answer and am unsure why. I'd appreciate a step by step reply so I can go over the problem with him carefully as well as see what I'm doing wrong. Any additional narrative you suppply would also be appreciated. Thanks very much. Here is the problem.

In 1967 the average math SAT score was 543.
In 1994 the average math SAT score was 499.
The standard deviation in both years was 110.
What percent of students scored over 700 in both years?

Thanks so much.

I'm thinking hte question is bad. It shuld say "each year" rather than "both years". There is not enough information to ask the question as presented.

(700-543)/110 = z1

(700-499)/110 = z2

A common error on this sort of problem is picking to wrong side. You want greater than 700. Make sure you pick the remainder of the region, to the right.
