1. Exactly one of six similar keys opens a certain door. If you try the keys one after another,
what is the expected number of keys one has to try to open the door?


2. A population consists of all the positive integers, and the probability of obtaining the integer
r from this population is
P(R = r) = k(1 − p)
r−1
for r = 1, 2, 3, · · · and 0 < p < 1.
Determine the constant k, and the mean and variance of R.
