My son is in year 5. I don't know the answer to the following question:
740 000 pebbles, to the nearest 10 000, are collected from a beach. What are the largest and smallest possible numbers of pebbles?
I really appreciate the help I get here. Could you please explain the steps for better understanding?
Thank you in advance!

Did you do a google search to find the answer?

What topic is your son studying in school now? What does his text book say regarding:

significant digits

rounding number and

error due to rounding.

He is in year 5. I tried but no luck.
I think the answer is:
Largest- 744999
Smallest- 735000
I am not sure though.

His textbook should have some worked out examples.

How many "piles" of 10,000 would you have out of 740,000 ?.....................................................edited

Suppose you want to purchase a book, which approximately costs $ 74. To the nearest dollar,

- what is the minimum price of the book?
- what is the maximum price of the book?

Largest- 744999
Smallest- 735000
Is it wrong?
Smallest is indeed 735000. If you had 734,999, which would be closer 730000 or 740000?

If you follow that logic, why would you pick 744999?

Actually, there are various ways to deal with numbers like 735000, which is equally distant from 730000. We need to know what your son’s school is teaching.
