We multiply 1/x by y/y. We multiply 1/y by x/x. y/(xy) + x/(xy) = (x + y)/(xy) Works the same as adding two rational numbers. EG x = 2 and y = 3 1/2 + 1/3 = ? 2*3 = 6; six is the common denominator. We multiply 1/2 by 3/3. We multiply 1/3 by 2/2. 3/6 + 2/6 = (3 + 2)/6 = 5/6
