I have two rooms for carpet to be installed which costs $15 per square yard.

173 x 131 = measurements of room 1 in inches
166 x 128 = measurements of room 2 in inches

Length x Width = Area

173 x 131 = 22663 Square Inches room 1
166 x 128 = 21248 Square Inches room 2

Converting from square inches to square yards...

36 inches in 1 (linear) yard
36 x 36 = 1296 (area of 1 square yard)

22663 / 1296 = 17.5 square yards room 1 (17.48688 rounded up to nearest tenth)
21248 / 1296 = 16.4 square yards room 2 (16.39506 rounded up to nearest tenth)

Calculating cost...

Room 1
17.5 x 15 = 262.5

Room 2
16.4 x 15 = 246

262.5 + 246 = $508.50 total (before tax)

Is this about right?

Yes, it is about right. Good job!

The exact amount is $508.23

Your result is a bit off because you introduced what we call round-off error, by rounding intermediate results.

It's best to continue using exact values throughout an exercise, and only round as the very last step.

(22663/1296 X 15) + (21248/1296 X 15)

262.5 + 246 = $508.50 total (before tax)

Yes, but only in the mathematical sense. In the "real world", they have to work with the widths of the rolls (probably twelve feet), and they have to take nap and overlap into account. So, in "real life", you'd probably be paying more. ;)

Yes, I just found that out myself when I was talking to the carpet guy! He said it comes in 12 foot rolls and there are those considerations you mentioned. So his square yardage was more than mine. His square yardage was around 39 for both rooms as opposed to my calculation of around 34 for both rooms. So the price was higher than what I calculated.

Edit: fixed typo (yardage vs footage)

That's square yardage. ;)
Indeed (fixed).

BTW, the guy didn't give me any numbers when he was at the property measuring. He only discussed it with me after he had got back to the office and "punched in" his numbers. So my guess is he is using some computer software to do these calculations based on the measurements he took.

I assume that the computer program he uses figures out how much square yardage is actually needed for carpet installation using 12-foot rolls and accounting for all the particulars of carpet installation (about which I know little) for a given area measurement. Probably something I can "Google" if I really want to know how these things are calculated.
