    No, it seems appropriate.

I need clarification on this pronoun.

Are you trying to say that your specific wording is appropriate?

Are you trying to say that a notice to the OP regarding our forum policies is appropriate?

    Something else?

    Abuse should lead to reminders.

Tell me that such reminders are not within my purview and I'll abandon the effort.

    Abuse?

I'm trying to ask that the wording of your reminder (we are not a free consulting service) be changed. Do you remember our earlier discussion about the private messages and reported post?

If you really enjoy using that phrase, then how about a compromise:

"I am not a free consulting service, but you're welcome to wait; others may help you."

You could then follow that with a neutral suggestion. I use something like:

"Please read the forum guidelines. This is a tutoring web site. We would like to know what you already understand about this question, followed by showing whatever attempts you've made. Where are you getting stuck?"

I'm not sure how this is different from "We are not a free consulting service". Personally, not unlike everyone else, I don't mind helping were I can, actual math student or not. There's plenty of evidence for that. Typically, it's just short reminder followed by whatever assistance can be mustered. Only on multiple, identical posts, where the more constructive behavior has already been demonstrated on the first encountered, does the more terse message appear.

We would like to know what you already understand about this question, followed by showing whatever attempts you've made. Where exactly are you getting stuck?"
This presupposes an actual math student who understands the forum's purpose but isn't real clear on the forum's mechanics. It doesn't seem to address the business intent often observed.

You know the difference between "We" and "I". You don't speak for the rest of the membership.

Some people are offended by certain presentations; my goal is to keep friction off the boards and to treat new members with neutral language.

If a new member creates a few posts at once, before understanding the guidelines, then their post count ought not to be perceived as an abuse. Let's give people the benefit of the doubt, until they give us a real reason not to.

We have a lot of different members from a lot of different places with a lot of different perspectives and backgrounds.

I understand some new members miss or ignore the guidelines.

If you find yourself getting hot under the collar, please leave the thread alone.

If you're still unable to compromise, then I'll invite Ted, staple and Subhotosh to weigh in, and hopefully we can arrive at a concensus together.

I'm not sure what this means.

Can you provide more detail about this intent that you often observe?

Any non-student. Usually one of these:
    1) Hi, I'm not a student. I'm working on a game design...
    2) My boss asked me to come up with something like...
