I understand what the numbers are, but not the symbols.
I'm trying to explain this to a younger kid, and I'm not really sure how ...

Since you haven't yet started arithmetic (else you'd at least know what an "equals" sign means), then perhaps this younger student should ask for help from a more-advanced student...?
