Can you help me with adding fractions with different denominators?

12 9/16 + 17 3/4 + 8 1/8 =

34 2/3 - 16 5/6 =

Hello aberf!

\(\displaystyle 1) \L 12\frac{9}{16} + 17\frac{3}{4} + 8\frac{1}{8} =\)

\(\displaystyle 2) \L 34\frac{2}{3} - 16\frac{5}{6} =\)

First we need to change everything into mixed numbers:

1) \(\displaystyle \L \frac{201}{16} + \frac{71}{4} + \frac{65}{8}=\)

Now we need to find a LCM, and in this case it is 16:

\(\displaystyle \L \frac{201}{16} + \frac{284}{16} + \frac{130}{16} =\frac{615}{16}\to38\frac{7}{16}\)

2) \(\displaystyle \L \L 34\frac{2}{3} - 16\frac{5}{6} =\)

Can you solve this now?

Thanks- I will try more problems to be sure I'm clear. I did not initially change into improper fractions- I came up with 37 23/16- and I was stuck... but, improper fractions that's a good way to do it. Thanks again.

37 23/16 is same as 38 7/16, aberf: so you were more or less correct;
23/16 = 1 7/16 : get it?
