Got this question and do not really understand it. Can someone please show me how to work this out:

Q. The amount of mony £1938 is to be divided into three parts in the ratio 1:1/3:1/4.

Calculate the value of the largest part, and choose the option corresponding to your answer.

A. £102 C. £161.5 E. £1368

B. £114 D. £1224 F. £1422

I've been told it is D, but how?

Please help!

Let x = largest part
Let x/3 = next largest part
let x/4 = smallest part

These three parts are in the desired ratio of 1:1/3:1/4

The total of all three parts is 1938. So,

x + (x/3) + (x/4) = 1938

The common denominator for all of the fractions is 12. Multiply both sides of the equation by 12 to eliminate the fractions:

12*x + 12*(x/3) + 12*(x/4) = 12*1938

12x + 4x + 3x = 23256

Can you finish it now?

Thank you for your kind help. I can follow it really well, but i'm stuck on the last part:

12*x + 12*(x/3) + 12*(x/4) = 12*1938

12x + 4x + 3x = 23256

I know the answer is 1224 which is x. but how do I find x first of all. 12*1938=23256, i'm just puzzled on 12x + 4x + 3x = 23256. I'm sorry if i'm missing something simple, it's been a while since I left school

12 apples + 4 apples + 3 apples = 19 apples; same thing: 19x

I can see the above, but how do you get 12 apples in the first place. i'm wanting to know how I get 1224 from 1938. so like above 1:1/3:11/4 or 1224+408+306= 1938

You must first find 1224 to work out the 1/3 & 1/4, is this right?

You're complicating it; it's as easy as this:

12 apples + 4 apples + 3 apples = 95 cents
19 apples = 95 cents
1 apple = 95 / 19 = 5 cents
