This is for students wishing to study for specialist maths exam 1&2, but if you want to post, please do. I will post solutions after a few days. The questions will gradually become harder.

Question 1

Fully factorize: 2Z^3 - 4Z^2 + 3Z -1 Over the complex number system.

Comments: This question is reactively easy. Quite a lot of students obtained the correct answer.

(I was wondering if anyone could please send me the link of a equation editor download - would make things easier)

I'm sorry, but whoever told you that FreeMathHelp was the discussion forum for whatever test-prep group you're in was mistaken. The forums here are for helping students with their homework exercises, not for posing new and unrelated problems. That is to say, the questions here should be coming from the students, not from the tutors.

To participate in a test-prep discussion, it might be better to find a test-prep site, or start a test-prep forum of your own. Let's try to keep posts here on-topic, and help some students, okay?

Thank you! :D

\(\displaystyle \L\\2x^{3}-4x^{2}+3x-1=(x-1)(2x^{2}-2x+1)\)

Of course, we can readily see x=1 is a 0.

The other two complex roots can be found by using the quadratic formula on the other portion of the factorization.

\(\displaystyle \L\\1, \;\ \frac{1}{2}+\frac{1}{2}i, \;\ \frac{1}{2}-\frac{1}{2}i\)

Why that is quite funny.

I do believe that you are mistaken 'stapel' as firstly I thought information was supposed to be free? And these topics are hardly un-related, for the students who are taking the subject 'Specialist maths' (around 6000 or so people) I do believe that this would be quite helpful. Specialist mats students homework is now to study for this exam (amongst other tasks).

Secondly, at which point in time in ANY of my posts did I even SUGGEST that I was a teacher or a tutor? I am actually a student undertaking Specialist Maths. I am posting not only problems that I can solve but those that I can't as some people might be interested in receiving help with these related topics. If you have any doubts please look at my profile and/or myspace.

I'm sorry if i might have mislead you. But if you still have concerns... PLEASE HAVE ME DELETED...

Oh and I posted this particular question in here (yes I was aware it doesn't fall under calculus) because I intend to move onto vector calculus and this question - and the ones to follow- would be introductions to those ones.

Once again I am sorry if i have ruffled up anyone's feathers.

And I shall not forget to thank gallactus for the post.

I will not post any more questions until this issue has been positively resolved. I hope to come to a 'mutually beneficial' arrangment.

Thank you.

Peace out.

stapel's point is that the whole premise of this board is to post threads because you're having trouble with something, not to provide for "Specialist Mathematics" students. The chances that somebody who reads this does Specialist Mathematics is about 1 in a million (or around that figure). You must remember that you're referring to a senior highschool course held exclusively in only one Australian state (I did Specialist Mathematics back in the day), to a board full of predominately Americans.

Fair points made by both of you.

The question that I posted did in fact feature on a recent practice exam that I did. I was wishing to compare my answer with that of others.

I also intend to post questions that I DO need help with.

I still don't see the problem. I thought that this site was http://www.freemathhelp.com. The url supposedly being self-explanatory.

So are you going to help me? Or just poke holes at the technicalities of my posts?

Don't get me wrong, I do appreciate your concerns, but is it really harming anyone? Does it really matter?

I understand the odds of actual specialist maths students actually finding this American based site. Which is why I intend to introduce my class mates to this site. However I am seriously re-considering the wisdom of this if every word they post will be subject to un-nessesary scrutiny.

All in all, I am also considering whether my time could be better spent studying for my exam, rather then arguing with you guys. My intentions were always of a good nature, and it saddens me that I must become argumentative over such a trivial matter.

What do you need help with? The left side of the equation you posted can be factorised using the factor theorem.

If you're wanting help with a question, you might want to try asking for help with a question.

If you're wanting to have your work checked, you might want to try posting your work and asking for it to be checked.

When you, instead, post along the lines of "I know how to do this; now you others in the study group give it a try", then I'm afraid readers will have the tendency to conclude that you are not asking for help and do not have work you want checked; in fact, that they are not even "invited to the party", so to speak.

I apologize for our all having misinterpreted your meaning. In future, please keep our shortcomings in mind, and express your meaning a bit more plainly for our benefit. If we all speak clearly, then perhaps you will be caused less offense in the future.

Thank you! :D
