1. ## Grade 9 Algebra Help

I have this question on one of my sheets my teacher gave me

Question:

Together a chair, a table and a lamp cost $592. The chair costs 4 times as much as the lamp and the table costs$23 less then the chair. Find the cost of the table.

I must find the variables as well

We need to see your work so we know where you are getting stuck - also to see what tools you know.

Did you assign a single variable name for "Table," or did you use 3 variables?
Did you translate the words of the problem into algebra?

That statement is enough for me to suggest that you need help from your teacher...

If you plug in x as the cost of the lamp you can set up an equation like so

(x) + (4x - 23) + (4x) = 592

where
4x=cost of chair
4x-23=cost of table
and
x=cost of the lamp

then you solve for x like so

5x-23+4x=592

9x-23=592

9x=615

x=205/3
not a nice number I know

but, this gives you the price of the lamp and they ask for the table which is 4x-23
so you plug in 205/3 as x and solve to get

$751/3 or$250.33
