7th Grade Math Integers Problem:

If the exercise were to say instead that the river's depth increases 4cm every year, could you figure out the total increase in depth after 20 years?

The negative sign in your exercise means that the depth is decreasing, instead of increasing; otherwise, the arithmetic is the same.
