Cryptography: using chain addition in the vic cipher.

I'm reading a book on cryptography and it a talked about using chain addition in the vic cipher. How does the chain addition work I've seen some examples and get stuff like the 1+1 =2 and 2+2 = 4. I get that but some of it I still have some questions. Thanks for any help
