NO. Equal signs MUST be valid. Whenever I grade an exam all I do is check the equal signs. Either I put a check mark over it or I slash it because it is invalid and deduct points. Again, equal signs must be equal. I guess if K-12 teachers pushed that more it would not bother me so much.
I have seen way too many times the following type of results
100 + 2 +7 - 2 + 9
= 102 + 7
=109 - 2
=107 + 9
= 116
And the teacher tells little Johnny good work. Shame on these teachers.
