Area of Kite as a function of X

A kite frame is to be made from six pieces of wood. The four pieces that form its border have been cut to the lengths indicated in the figure:

Assume r = 4 and k = 13. Express the area of the kite as a function of X. Show or explain the process.

I'm sorry, but as you as saw in the Read Before Posting thread, we don't do student's homework for them. That's your job. We're more than happy to provide hints. That said, I'd begin by noting that a kite can be divided into four right triangles. Looking at the two larger triangles, you know the hypotenuse of each of them (your given k) and one of the legs (your unknown x). You can use the Pythagorean Theorem to find an expression for the other leg in terms of x. Then do a similar process for the two smaller right triangles. Now you continue from here...

Yea sorry first time posting. I used the pythagorean theorem thanks. Came out with the result X(sqRoot(16-x^2)+ sqRoot(169-x^2) does that look about right?

Being a nit picker, no :). But all you probably did was make a typo, see red above.
