Hello

I am having trouble understanding percentages … so for example

I have 300 apples. I reduce the number of apples to 75

What percentage have I reduced the number of apples by ? How do I work this out ? I don’t want the answer just the explanation

the original (base) number is = 300

We reduced (the base) by (300-75=) 225

compared to the original number, we reduced it by (225/300 =) 0.75 fraction

That is the original number was reduced by (0.75 * 100 =) 75%.
 
Percent Change Formula:

(New - Old) / Old

If the result is positive, then the percent change represents an increase.

If the result is negative, then the percent change represents a decrease.

Notice the word "by" in" at the end of the question. You reduced the number of apples from 300 to 75 so you reduced then by 300- 75= 225.

225 is 225/300= 3/4= 75% of 300.
