My question: does 15 x 20/60 = 15 (20/60) ?


The choices of answers are as follow:


A- 15 x 20/60 + 10/60 x 5 + 8 x 30/60


B- (15 (20) + 5 (10) + 8 (30)) / 60


C- 15 (20/60) + 5 (10/60) + 8 (30/60)


D- Both B and C

E- None


The correct answer is D (both B and C): but how can answer A not equal to B and C please?

Yes \(\displaystyle 15\times 20/60\) is the same as 15(20/60). They are both equal to 5.

You say "The choices of answers are as follow:" but you don't say what the question was. All three of (A), (B), and (C) are the same- they are all equal to 5+ 5/6+ 4= 9 and 5/6.


If you are required to pick one of these I would point out that (D) says only that "B and C" are the same and that is a true statement. It does not say that (A) is not the same as (B) and (C) so .

The question is only: How many miles did she cover?

So maybe it was a typo in the test...
