I was thinking, is there such thing as a 4.5 sided shape? Or, for that matter, a 3.9471 sided shape?

Basically, can such shapes (shapes with a fraction of a side) exist? And if so, how would one draw them and would standard geometry rules apply to them?

Thanks all! :D

How are you defining "side" and "shape"?

Paraphrasing Stapel's answer above:

That totally depends on the definition of shape (is 8 a valid shape?) and definition of side (does a circle have a side)?

YES

a square with area 20.25 sq.in. is SIDED with 4.5 in. lines!

I have sided with you; that's a valid conception to define, for one meaning of "4.5 sided shape".

Here's another (perhaps more shapely, but less wieldy).

The OP may be discussing continuous-function interpretations [seems to desire some meaning for d(4.5), d(3.9471), and such]. Our two definitions accommodate that, yes?

It'd be easier
using your definitionto proportionately draw a sketch of d(9270.4358), however.
