can someone assist me with this problem?

Which of the lines below is a slant (or oblique) asymptote for the graph of
y = (x2 + 2x - 1)/(x - 1).
 
I get asymptotes of x=1 and y=x+3, but do you understand why?
x=1 is because x cannot =1 because if it did then the equation would be 2/0 which is undefined.
y=x+3 is because if you do algebraic division you get y=x+3+2/(x-1) and as x tends to infinity the 2/(x-1) bit tends to 0, so y tends to x+3, so you get an asymptote.
