I dont know where to start. If I have a 9 " by 12" paper and need to get a continuous circle out of it? what percentage of paper will be wasted? Thanks for your help.

I'm not sure what is meant by a "continuous circle". The largest circle possible would be one with a radius half that of the width of the paper. I would say you could figure the area of that circle and subtract that area from the area of the paper leaving you with the amount of paper wasted. That area is what percent of the area of the original piece of paper?

Re: circle from a rectangle

the area of the rectangle is 12x9 = 108 and area of the circle is 3.14 x 36 = 113.04. that does not seem right.

Hello, mathhelp1!

The area of the rectangle is 12 x 9 = 108
and area of the circle is 3.14 x 36 = 113.04.
That does not seem right.

You have a radius of 6 inches.

How did you cut a 12-inch circle from a 9 x 12 sheet?

I do not know about circles-

You can cut pretty large but thin cylinders out of it.

If you know how to make Mobius strip - and keep cutting the height into halves - you'll get bunch of inter-connected cylinders.

Hey Sub, you been drinking?

No it is just those puerple elephants dancing in my head ....

Seriously though - sometimes these questions are asked without much of a thought to nominclature. Circle - hollow cylinder - annular region all are interchangable - in "creative" math class (shouldn't be and not always done - but "is" done). I was trying to get clarification - then you reminded me of that half full wine glass.....

Hello All:

This was an actual question posted by a student who needed help. I would ask that only intelligent serious and sober people reply. Someone needs to monitor these responses.
The actual question is wether you can cut out a a continous circle from a rectangular shaped paper 12 x 9 inches.

If you had shown some serious work/thought behind your question - someone would have answered seriously.

When you replied that the diameter of the circle to be 12" - it showed lack of real effort or lack of knowledge regarding "looks of a circle" - or both. This response was so misguided - it was not even wrong.

If I knew how to solve the problem I would not hvae posted a question. Who are you to judge anyone least of all a student looking for help. Do not bother to reply. I already ahve the answer from someone much more intelligent and classy than you. Someone should monitor the replies and you should not be allowed to answer any postings. You are very rude.

Don't go away mad mathhelp1, but go away...

If someone is trying (you, the student, both?) to cut out a circle from a rectangular sheet of paper, the circle
being wider (larger diameter) than the sheet's width, then ANYONE would consider that a prank/joke

Are you all missing some wirining in your heads. The student got the 12 inches from an answer you Denis posted. They misunderstood the directerd you Denis provided. But to post a rude remark is not acceptable. Neither you or the other winner could help solve the problem so if anyone should go away it is the 2 of you. carwl back into your hole. The diameter of the circle is not 12. We all got it. Anything else? Do you feel better about yourself !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The tutors are rude for requesting clarification and gently pointing out fairly obvious and silly errors...? And the above is the conduct we should aspire to...?

It is to be regretted if you find any correctly, however respectful, to be this terribly upsetting. But castigating the volunteers who tried to offer assistance (and who still don't know what you meant by your original post) is not acceptable.

I'm sorry you didn't find what you wanted here. In future, kindly please remember that other people can't read your mind, so it would be helpful if you would communicate clearly, especially when specifically asked for specific and necessary information.

My best wishes to you.

Eliz.
