Hi! I'd like to know how to set up the following on a graphing calculator:

f(x)=3x+2; g(x)=x-1

If I use Y[sub1]=3x+2 and Y[sub2]=x-1, how can I use Y[sub3] to find f(g(x)) and g(f(x))?

My text shows: Y[sub3]=Y[sub1](Y[sub2](x)), but I don't know how to put the Ys in the Y= window.

Thank you,

Brian

I do not have a TI-83 handy to check, but I seem to remember that the Y variables are accessed by first pressing the VAR key (VARS, maybe?), followed by selecting the appropriate menu.

If you still cannot figure it out, then let me know, and I will go to ti.com and download the user guide and look it up for you.

By the way, the Free Math Help site has a board specifically for asking calculator questions. Next time, please post your calculator questions there.

Why on earth are they requiring you to attempt to compose the functions like this?!?

It's so much simpler to just do the algebra and then plug that into your calculator!

The "VARS" key should be right by the down-arrow key. Enter f(x) and g(x) in Y1 and Y2. Then f(g(x)) would be Y3=3Y1+2 and g(f(x)) would be Y4=Y2-1.
