Hi, I'm having problems with converting DMS to degrees. This is for my trigonometry class in college. I went ahead and tried to work out the following problems.... 1degree,2minutes,3seconds and convert it to degree but I get a different answer than the book. (see attached picture) what could I be doing wrong?
Thanks,

Thanks,

According to your calculation 3" > 8° - which could not be correct

2' = 1/30 °
3" = 1/1200 °

1°2' 3" = 1 + 1/30 + 1/1200 = (1200 + 40 + 1)/1200 = 1241/1200 = 1.0341667 °

Now you can reduce the answer to required significant digits (or accuracy).

OMG, it was an issue with both my windows calculator and my hand held calculator. I needed to check if it gave a symbol to move the decimal place over a couple of notches.

Thanks for your help.
