So, the Pfizer vaccine recruited 43538 on to its trial. At the moment it has around 94 positive cases ( and it turned out very few of these were given the vaccine, hence the excitement around the study). The trial is going to continue until it has 164 confirmed cases. Where does this 164 come from? Half are given the vaccine, half are given the placebo.

Today, I was reading about the moderna vaccine and it has 30 000 on its trial and needs to reach 53 confirmed cases before making conclusions? Why 53?
Seems an oddly specific number?

Any thoughts?
