A cylinder of internal radius \(\displaystyle a\) and external radius \(\displaystyle b = 1.10a\) is subjected to \(\displaystyle \bold{(a)}\) internal pressure \(\displaystyle p_i\) only and \(\displaystyle \bold{(b)}\) external pressure \(\displaystyle p_o\) only. Determine for each case the ratio of maximum to minimum tangential stress.

This problem can be solved by the tangential stress formula. The formula for the internal pressure will be a little different than the formula for the external pressure. But the concept is the same.
